On 24 June, Cândido de Oliveira Martins, a lecturer at the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the Portuguese Catholic University - Braga, took part in the programme Sociedade Civil, broadcast on RTP2. The programme was dedicated to celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of Camilo Castelo Branco (1825-2025), one of the greatest names in Portuguese literature.
Born in Lisbon, but deeply connected to the north of Portugal, where he lived for most of his life and where he developed as a writer, Camilo has been the subject of renewed academic and cultural interest as part of the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of his birth.
The RTP programme, moderated by journalist Luís Castro, invited Cândido Oliveira Martins, a lecturer in Portuguese Studies and Communication Sciences, as an expert on Camilo Castelo Branco. He is the author of several essays, articles and books on the writer, as well as being responsible for critical editions of several of his works, with text fixation and analytical introductions.
His participation in the programme, moderated by journalist Luís Castro, helped to deepen the reflection on Camilo's life, work and current affairs, in a year in which the country is revisiting the legacy of one of its greatest literary figures.
