Program Description

Psychology is a scientific area of enormous social relevance that covers all aspects of our lives. Therefore, training in Psychology should be governed by high standards of scientific and pedagogical quality, and students, in the first stage of training in Psychology, should develop theoretical knowledge and generic skills in this field.

The training in the undergraduate course in Psychology at the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences of UCP focuses on aspects such as the psychological, biological and social processes that explain human behaviour, the assessment and diagnosis of problems and needs, as well as the different models and techniques of psychological assessment and intervention in the various areas of Psychology (Clinical, Educational, Family, Organisational, Health), as well as the practice of scientific research.

Since psychologists are professionals who base their actions on scientific evidence, in order to find answers to complex individual and social questions, with the purpose of responding to these needs, the Degree in Psychology, according to the inspiring principles of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences, is framed by an updated Christian anthropology, that is, in dialogue with the Sciences, the Humanities and the culture of our time.

To this extent, the course presents itself as innovative and constitutes the initial stage of training in Psychology for students who wish to develop their professional activity as psychologists, in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Declaration, the requirements of the Portuguese Psychologists' Association (OPP) and the recommendations of the European Federation of Psychologists' Associations, included in the European Qualification Standard for Psychologists.

The Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences offers training opportunities at Master’s level in the areas of Clinical and Health Psychology, Educational Psychology and Work and Organizational Psychology.

Why Psychology?

The Degree in Psychology has been operating since 2004, with an already vast experience at the level of training in this area, and underwent curricular and pedagogical adaptation according to the Bologna Model in 2006.

Therefore, the Degree in Psychology aims to train future professionals that are scientifically competent, with a high professional sense, guided by an ethical and deontological standard that should translate into an intervention with people, groups and organisations, able to promote and improve health, quality of life, well-being and full development throughout life.

It also intends to train Psychologists with a global profile, to face the psychosocial challenges that require an eco-developmental intervention; that is, besides a scientific training of excellence, it promotes an integral training of students, so that, according to models inspired by a Humanistic Ethics, opportunities for self-knowledge and personal development are offered. In addition to learning and research activities, students benefit from Tutoring programs and participation in Community Service programs.

Employability Rate

This undergraduate course aims to provide students with the basic training in Psychology, which allows them to continue their academic and professional training and to enter the job market, where we have witnessed in recent years the diversification of the areas in which psychologists work and the increase in the number of integrated professionals. Official data from the Directorate General of Education and Science Statistics (2020) indicate that graduates in Psychology at the FFCS have an employment rate of 93.3%.

Customise your degree

Specialise in an area of interest

The degree does not have a professionalising character, since the autonomous professional practice of psychology implies the attendance of a Masters in Psychology, a necessary condition for the enrolment in the OPP.

The course allows for the continuation of studies in a Master's degree in an area of specialization, according to the interests and needs of the student's life contexts. The Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences offers opportunities for continuing education through three Master's degrees.

Optional curricular units

In order to allow students to reinforce the area of specialisation of their interest, the degree program includes a diverse set of optional curricular units.
