On April 30, 2026, at 2:30 p.m., the Fr. Júlio Fragata, SJ Library at the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the Catholic University of Braga will host the event “The Cave of Infinite Optimization: Between the Quest for Improvement and the Loss of Authenticity,” in the field of Anthropology.
This event offers a profound and timely reflection on how contemporary society—marked by a constant demand for performance, self-improvement, and exposure—can lead to the dilution of personal identity. Drawing symbolic inspiration from the classic allegory of the cave, the event suggests that, whereas we once lived trapped by shadows, today we inhabit a universe of “mirrors,” where self-image and the perception of others take center stage.
The session will feature three experts from different fields of study, with the aim of fostering interdisciplinary dialogue:
- Prof. Dr. Artur Galvão, in the field of Philosophy;
- Dr. Vanessa Pereira, in the field of Psychology;
- Dr. Bruno Rodrigues, in the field of Aesthetic Harmonization.
From these complementary perspectives, we will explore fundamental questions regarding the construction of identity, the limits of self-improvement, and the risks of a culture centered on perfection and appearance.
The initiative is aimed at the entire academic community and the general public interested in reflecting on the anthropological challenges of the contemporary world.
Admission is free.
