Degree in Applied Data Science

Program Description

Data Science seeks to extract value from data using computing and statistics. Often, this involves developing artificial intelligence models that make predictions, automate processes, or drive the development of new products. This course provides a solid understanding of machine learning algorithms (learning from large databases), which is essential for the practice of Data Science. In addition to training and applying Artificial Intelligence models, graduates should be able to process large amounts of data and produce insightful analyses of trends and patterns within the data.

This is the right program for anyone who enjoys computer science, mathematics, and statistics and wants to apply these disciplines to decision-making or the development of intelligent systems in various industries.

Why Choose Applied Data Science at Católica Braga?

1. Learn the technologies that matter, from the people who use them

Faculty members who are currently collaborating or have recently collaborated with companies on data science projects. Learning about technologies and tools that reflect industry trends and best practices.

2. Learning by Doing

Active learning methodologies based on problem-solving, projects, and collaboration. An individual project in the final semester, carried out at a partner company or as part of a research team.

3. Comprehensive, Future-Proof Education

Courses in Philosophy, Law, and the Humanities that encourage students to reflect on the impact of technology on society. Outside of class, the “Sê+" program helps students develop transferable skills in areas such as interpersonal relationships, career development, self-care, and oral and written communication, among others.

4. Close contact and personalized support

A close-knit academic environment and direct interaction with faculty members, fostering academic success and career guidance.

5. Beyond the Classroom

A dynamic academic community, offering opportunities to participate in cultural groups, associations, clubs, volunteer initiatives, and social gatherings.

Learning Objectives

Graduates should be able to:

  • Understand business needs and design technological solutions that address them, in consultation with the various stakeholders;
  • Train and apply artificial intelligence models;
  • Develop software that makes a difference for organizations, such as data processing systems and business intelligence platforms for data visualization and decision support;
  • Extract useful knowledge from large volumes of real-world data, whether in the form of tabular records, text, or images;
  • Develop data-driven smart products, such as chatbots and recommendation systems.

Career Opportunities

There is a high demand for data science specialists, driven by the volume of accumulated data and the interest in understanding and leveraging artificial intelligence systems in sectors such as technology, banking, telecommunications, healthcare, energy, manufacturing, and public administration, among others. This course addresses this need and serves as a good starting point for training professionals with the following profiles:

  • Data Analyst or Big Data Analyst - Analyzes large amounts of data, taking into account domain-specific knowledge. Produces reports and visualizations to support decision-making.
  • Data scientist – Performs the duties of a data analyst, with a greater focus on technology. Develops software for systematic and automated analysis tailored to the problem at hand. Develops data-driven intelligent systems.
  • Data Engineer – Develops software that manages and processes data, making it accessible and ensuring its quality.
  • Machine Learning, Deep Learning, or Artificial Intelligence Engineer – Develops and deploys Artificial Intelligence models. Develops software to train, test, and monitor the performance of the models.

Graduates will be able to immediately begin working in a profession related to data science. However, the program is also well-suited for students who wish to pursue a master’s degree in data science, artificial intelligence, or computer science.

This course can also be viewed as a general foundation for the future job market, as it encourages analytical and quantitative thinking, develops advanced digital skills, and fosters critical thinking and experimentation.
