Canon Eduardo Duque, a professor at the Catholic University of Braga, was awarded the IACOBUS Papers Prize on April 27 as part of the IACOBUS initiative for his paper titled “The Family in the Mirror: Generational Values and Attitudes of the Portuguese Regarding the Family.”
The award-winning study is a quantitative research project focused on contemporary changes in the family in Portugal, analyzing the values, attitudes, and perceptions of different generations regarding family life. The research seeks to understand how Portuguese people currently view fundamental aspects of family life, such as the transmission of values, emotional support, education, family life, religion, and intergenerational relationships.
The study also addresses some of the main challenges faced by families in contemporary society, including the work-life balance, lack of time, and the impact of new technologies and social media on family relationships. The analysis highlights significant changes in patterns of social interaction, ways of living together, and the moral and cultural values associated with the family.
The research also explores the impact of secularization and generational shifts on the redefinition of family values, revealing a growing emphasis on individual autonomy and emotional relationships. In this context, the study makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the transformations of the family in contemporary Portugal.
The IACOBUS Papers Award is part of the IACOBUS initiative, promoted by the Galicia–Northern Portugal Euroregion, which aims to encourage joint research, academic mobility, and the promotion of scientific output among higher education institutions in the cross-border region.
