The GIAN Ecojesuit Network, together with the Secretariat for Social Justice and Ecology, prepared a Signature Declaration on the Commitment to Advocacy for South-North Climate Justice, in view of the Annual United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28), the be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from November 30th until December 12th, 2023.
At this event, heads of state will meet to make decisions and implement the Paris Agreement, as well as its related mechanisms.
Pope Francis, in his recent apostolic exhortation Laudate Deum (LD), calls on those who join COP28 to be “strategists capable of considering the common good and the future of their children, more than the short-term interests of certain countries or companies” ( LD 60). The Holy Father reminds all people of faith of our shared responsibility to care for creation.
This Signing Declaration is a way of affirming our commitment to Laudato Si’, Laudate Deum and our UAP ‘to care for our Common Home’. It outlines five key decision points for COP28, as well as five necessary commitments from the Ignatian family around the world if we are to respond coherently to South-North climate justice advocacy.
It is planned to publish the Declaration on November 6, the International Day for the Prevention of Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. I am aware that time is very short to make this request of you and others.
