On 14 July, the Portuguese Catholic University hosted the national meeting “Research Security and Integrity” at its Lisbon campus. The event brought together researchers, academics, and institutional leaders to reflect on the challenges posed to security and integrity in scientific research. Organised by the Rectorate, the meeting marked the fourth edition of CARE – Católica Research, an initiative that convenes researchers and academics around topics of major academic relevance. This event provided a strategic opportunity to discuss institutional and academic practices in a context of growing ethical and regulatory demands on research, incorporating contributions from a wide range of scientific fields and international experiences.
With the participation of representatives from all four Catholic University campuses — Braga, Porto, Viseu, and Lisbon — the initiative stood out for bringing together all of the University’s research units in a unique moment of dialogue and the exchange of best practices.
Among the participants were researchers and academics Ângela Leite, Armanda Gonçalves, , Bruno Nobre, Luísa Magalhães, Ricardo Peixoto, Sandra Costa and Tânia Oliveira, all members of the Centre for Philosophical and Humanistic Studies (CEFH) at the Catholic University of Portugal – Braga. Their involvement underscored the essential contribution of the CEFH to the interdisciplinary reflection on matters of integrity and security in research, reinforcing the central role of the Humanities in this nationwide academic dialogue.
The programme included plenary sessions, roundtables, and parallel sessions (split sessions), addressing topics such as responsible internationalisation, the use of artificial intelligence in research, ethics and outreach, and the evaluation of research within the institution.
The presence of international guests such as Peter Weijland (TU Delft) and Alexander Hasgall, alongside moderation by Vice-Rectors Peter Hanenberg and Miguel Athayde Marques, lent the event a global and strategic dimension. The opening session was chaired by Rector Isabel Capeloa Gil.
This meeting marks a milestone in the Catholic University’s ongoing commitment to excellence, responsibility, and transparency in scientific production, reaffirming the central role of research in the University’s mission.
