The Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences is organising two conferences on Blessed Miguel de Carvalho, a Jesuit missionary from Braga (1579) who was martyred in Omura, Nagasaki (1624, 400 years ago).

The commemorative event will take place in the Faculty's Aula Magna next Friday, October 25, at 6pm, with the following programme:

- ‘Braga 400 years ago (17th century)’ - Professor Miguel Bandeira;
- ‘The mission and Fr Miguel de Carvalho’ - Primate Archbishop José Cordeiro.

These conferences conclude the commemorations of the IV Centenary of the Martyrdom of Miguel de Carvalho (25-08-1624) and the III Centenary of the Ceiling of the Great Hall of the Biscainhos Museum (1724). Partners in the commemoration are: the Portuguese Province of the Society of Jesus; the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences, which before the foundation of the Portuguese Catholic University was called the Beato Miguel de Carvalho Philosophical Institute; and the Biscainhos Museum, which belonged to the family of the illustrious Jesuit.

Blessed Miguel de Carvalho, along with four other Portuguese Jesuits, was part of a group of 205 Christians martyred in Japan. They were beatified in 1867 and are currently being canonised in Rome.
