On 2 July, the Catholic University of Portugal - Braga organised an Open Day dedicated to the Social Work degree. The event, organised by the students of the ‘SerSocial’ Commission, introduced the course to secondary school students who wanted to find out more about this area.
During the day, participants visited the campus, attended information sessions on access to higher education, scholarships and academic life, took part in practical activities and had a convivial lunch.
There was also time to hear from professionals in the field and find out about career opportunities through a visit to the Red Cross Mobile Health Promotion Unit. The young people also took part in a parliamentary simulation, where they were able to make decisions about real social problems.
The Social Work degree programme at UCP Braga trains professionals who are prepared to intervene with people, families and communities in vulnerable situations. Social workers work in areas such as:
- Local authorities, schools, hospitals, health centres and IPSS
- Health and social inclusion
- Support for victims of violence, poverty and social exclusion
- Support for children, young people and the elderly
- Protection of children and young people
- Support for people with disabilities
- Social reintegration and rehabilitation
- Social responsibility in companies
The course has a strong practical component, with internships from the 2nd year onwards, and is committed to ethical, humane training with a strong connection to social reality.
