The António Ramos Rosa Poetry Grand Prix, organised by the Portuguese Writers' Association with the sponsorship of Faro City Council and the Millenium BCP Foundation, is designed to award an annual prize to a work of poetry, in Portuguese, published in its entirety and in its first edition.
Cândido Oliveira Martins, a lecturer at the Portuguese Catholic University - Braga, was part of the jury for this competition, along with Helena Buescu, a lecturer at the University of Lisbon, and Ana Isabel Soares, a lecturer at the University of the Algarve, and they honoured the winning book of poetry by A. M. Pires Cabral, entitled ‘Na Morte de Erato’ (In the Death of Erato) (Tinta da China).
Awarding the prize unanimously, the jury justified its decision by recognising ‘the courage to recover a certain poetry of thought without the melancholic diversions of nostalgia, in an elegant discourse worthy of the author's work’. He added: "The dialogue that the poet establishes with the dying muse, Erato, develops as between equal workers of the poetic verb, equally adept at handling their differences. It is an elegy devoid of sadness or nostalgia, which skilfully articulates colloquial steps with the elevation of the classical verb," the jury said in its statement of reasons.
The prize money is €12,500.00 for the honoured author.
