The degree courses at the Portuguese Catholic University (UCP) are highly employable. Father José Lopes, president of UCP's Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences (FFCS), gave this assurance at the welcoming session for secondary school students who took part in the ‘Open Day’ yesterday.

The aim of the initiative was to introduce potential future students to the courses, the student associations and groups and the facilities.

‘Católica graduates have a very high level of employability and the success rate of our students in completing their courses has also been very high. For us, this means that we are doing a good job,’ emphasised the president of the FFCS.

Father José Lopes pointed to the difference in teaching between UCP and other Portuguese higher education establishments as one of the reasons for this success. ‘We believe that ours is a type of higher education that can train very valuable people for society. We believe that this is done through reason and heart. We have Christian values that we propose and defend,’ said Fr José Lopes.

Another reason for the UCP's attractiveness and success is its commitment to internationalisation. ‘We are also very committed to internationalisation and, as we Jesuits (of the Society of Jesus) have this international network of universities, we are deepening these contacts so that our students can also study at Jesuit universities in foreign countries,’ said the president of UCP's FFCS.

Father José Lopes also gave a historical summary of the teaching practised by the Society of Jesus in Portugal and particularly in Braga.

The president of the FFCS Students' Association, Mariana Peixoto, who took office yesterday, highlighted the various activities carried out by the association and the faculty in order to better serve the students. ‘Our aim is to listen to you and give you the best we have,’ emphasised Mariana Peixoto.

The 90 or so students from various school groups also learnt about the courses in Tourism, Philosophy, Portuguese Studies, Social Work, Psychology, Applied Data Science and Communication Sciences taught at UCP.
