1. CHECK IF YOU'RE ELIGIBLE

The information provided on this page is aimed at foreign students who fulfil the legally established eligibility requirements to apply for a place on degree courses under the International Student Statute (regulations available here). To do so, they must fulfil the following requirements.

Nationality requirements

  • Not be a national of a member state of the European Union;
  • Not be a direct descendant, spouse (husband/wife) or partner of a national of a member state of the European Union;
  • Not have been legally resident in Portugal for more than 2 years, uninterruptedly, as of 1st January of the year in which you wish to enter higher education (yourself, your spouse or a parent with whom you are legally resident);
  • Not be a beneficiary, on 1st January of the year in which you intend to enter higher education, of equal rights and duties status granted under an international treaty between the Portuguese State and the State of which you are a national.

This scheme should also be used by international students who are already attending higher education in a foreign country or hold a higher education degree (national or foreign). In this case, if you wish to request credit for subjects already taken on your previous course, you must submit the respective syllabuses duly certified by the university of origin.

Foreign nationals who are not covered by the International Student Statute are admitted to the UCP under the conditions applicable to students with Portuguese nationality or from a European Union country.

Access requirements

Access to higher education is granted through the fulfilment of a number of requirements. The student needs to have completed Portuguese secondary education and a set of entrance exams (national exams) - which corresponds to the natural path taken by national students. International students need to fulfil similar requirements:

  • Hold a qualification that gives access to higher education in the country of origin (secondary education) OR Hold a Portuguese secondary education course, or a legally equivalent qualification;
The formal and documentary equivalence of the qualification is required

Have realised:

  • National final exam of foreign secondary education considered homologous (equivalent) to the entrance exam required for the course you wish to apply for [a)] OR
  • National exams in Portugal of the entrance exams required for the course you wish to apply for.

These requirements are assessed by analysing documents and conducting a face-to-face technical interview.
Click here for more information.

Depending on the results of the interview, you may need to take an exam at the Faculty equivalent to the Portuguese national exam.

a) Consult the exam correspondence table here.
