The Palgrave Studies in Otherness and Communication book series already has 5 of the 10 volumes published online, in E-Book, Hardback and Paperback formats and sold individually by chapter.

The editors, Luísa Magalhães (Centre for Philosophical and Humanistic Studies/Portuguese Catholic University-Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences) and Enrique Castelló-Mayo (University of Santiago de Compostela-Facultad de Ciências de la Comunicación) have put together an international call for scholars from all over the world for a project that has been welcomed by Springer Nature at its Palgrave Macmillan office in New York, USA.

At the root of this editorial project is an interdisciplinary perspective that develops the concept of Otherness. This development aims to question the contexts of ‘difference’ that condition the life and interaction of various communities, articulating prejudices and idiosyncrasies of various kinds and hindering access to common cultural space.

The project addresses topics related to exclusionary human behaviour in contexts of communication and socio-cultural interaction. The proposed volumes include subjects relating to the mass media and focus on problems of inequality in communication referenced in international environments, addressing issues of formal and informal education, politics, technology, identities and segregation, bullying and language acquisition.

This is a series that is committed to the intersection between different areas of research, combining a common interest linked to understanding the effects of otherness and exclusion on the socio-cultural development of various communities. This approach has the particularity of focussing on the position of the Other, the excluded, the destitute, giving them their own voice and an appropriate human and communicative framework.

With a broad interdisciplinary scope, the structure of the 10 volumes points to a sharing of specialised knowledge that materialises in dialogue between disciplines from fields as diverse as Communication Sciences, Philosophy, Education Sciences, Sociology, Arts and Humanities, Cultural Studies, Digital Communication, Political Studies and Intercultural Communication.

More than just a joint publishing project, Palgrave Studies in Otherness and Communication is therefore an unavoidable example on the international research scene, led by academics from Portugal (Universidade Católica Portuguesa) and Spain (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela), in a proposal for sustainable and coherent cultural action that dignifies the University and values scientific research and international knowledge sharing.
