1st Year Students

aking into account some difficulties in the timely arrival of many students from PALOP to the 1st year, which ends up affecting their performance at the beginning of the school year, often compromising their motivation and future enjoyment of the course, registration should be done until the last working day of October.

The Braga Regional Center, permanently concerned with its students and their academic success, has decided to implement a set of measures that aim to help these students to have a better integration and to increase their academic performance, thus reducing the difficulties of attendance that cause an exaggerated extension of the course and, in many cases, the dropout itself. In the plan of measures to be implemented, the situation of each student will be taken into account, especially with regard to their final high school classification and the date they start attending.

Thus, for most students, a Preparatory Course will be implemented, throughout the 1st year, in which an annual unit of Portuguese and several semesters will be taught:

• ICT, Personal and Social Development (1st semester);
• Mathematics (2nd semester).

Each unit will correspond to a workload of 45 hours per semester, starting on November 2. Attendance will be free of charge.

Students with a final secondary school classification equal to or higher than 14 points and who arrive at the university until October 31st may attend this course optionally, being able to enroll in the Curricular Units (CUs) they wish, of the course they applied to. Students arriving at the university after October 31 may optionally attend this course and enroll, only as listeners, in three CUs (if they have a final average of 14/20 in high school), in four CUs (if they have a final average of 15/20 in high school), or in all the CUs of the semester (if they have a final average of 16/20 or higher in high school). They may have access to the exams at the end of the semester, if the respective teacher considers it necessary (transferring the registration as listener to registration as student). In the second semester they can register for all the CUs of their respective course.

Students with a final secondary school classification below 14 and who arrive at the university until 31 October must attend the preparatory course and may enroll in two CUs in the 1st semester of the course they applied for and three CUs in the 2nd semester;
and who arrive after October 31, must attend the preparatory course and may register, only as listeners, in two 1st semester CUs, defined by the course coordinators. They may have access to the exams at the end of the semester, if the respective teacher considers it necessary (transferring, for this purpose, the registration as listener to registration as student). In the second semester they may register as students in three CUs.
