- Identify phenomena of linguistic variation and change and understand them as properties of natural languages;
- Introduce the students to the emergence, historical development, and internal variation of Portuguese, complementing the description of the language in other curricular units and in relation with cultural and literary studies of Portuguese
- Research and describe aspects of dialectal, social and individual variation in Portuguese;
- Describe differentiating features of the national varieties of Portuguese - European, Brazilian and African;
- Identify characteristics of the Portuguese language, relating them to its historical course and contrasting them with other Romance languages
- Describe the main linguistic changes in the evolution from Latin to ancient Portuguese and from ancient to contemporary Portuguese
- Relate those changes to different types of factors;
- Know and critically evaluate some interpretative proposals of aspects of the history and variation of the Portuguese language.
