Sociology of Culture

5 ECTS / Semestre / Português

In sociology, culture is understood as a system of meanings and values assimilated and produced by the members of a society. It is thus perceived as the set of instruments not genetically acquired by the human being, as well as all the behavioral facets acquired throughout life, so that it is considered as a dimension consubstantial to any human action. This course aims to lead the student to distinguish the various realities to which the term "culture" refers, as well as the historical understanding of its genesis and the relationships that exist between them, in order to understand, on the one hand, the relationship between culture and different social phenomena and, on the other, to be able to use the most relevant theories of culture in its various contexts.
