Program Description

What are the objectives?

At the end of the course, students should have the following skills:

  • Basic knowledge of the specific nature and function of myths in Ancient Greece;
  • Recognition of the most relevant mythical stories of the classical Greek-Latin tradition, organized into general thematic units (myths of origins, heroic myths, tragic myths, etiological myths, eschatological myths...);
  • Recognition of the narratives of the ancient literary tradition reflected in other areas of artistic expression;
  • Recognition of the dominant importance of myths in the daily lives of individuals and social organizations, as a privileged means of expressing the imaginary and collective memory;
  • Application of knowledge of myths and symbols in the educational context of the classroom or in contexts of dynamic social interaction.

Recipients

The Free Course on Introduction to Greek Mythology is aimed at all possible audiences, from the Portuguese Catholic University or outside (even pre-university students, from the 10th grade onwards).

Methodologies

The course will have a theoretical-practical nature: an initial theoretical exposition of the various contents will be followed by more practical moments of interaction between the trainees, in order to encourage the sharing of knowledge and regular debate not only on the historical foundations, but also on the symbolic implications of the narratives and their reflections in the repertoire of the Western literary and artistic tradition. Resources such as texts and PowerPoint presentations will be used.
