Gulbenkian opens new edition of Young Talent scholarships

Aimed at supporting talent and encouraging young students to take their first steps in research, the Gulbenkian New Talent Scholarship programme is open to Bachelor's or Master's degree students in the areas of science: biology, physics, mathematics and chemistry, as well as in any area of the humanities, arts and social sciences.

Part of a comprehensive research project, the scholarships, whose applications are open until September 30th. Include an immersive talent enrichment program, scientific retreats at Gulbenkian, and mentoring by tutors and a scientific committee.

To apply, students must be currently enrolled in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a bachelor's or integrated master's degree; or in the 1st year of a master's degree; and have a grade point average of 17 or higher at the time of application.

Divided into three components, the scholarship consists of support worth €1,000 for further studies and research, and may also include support of up to €1,500 for talent enrichment activities to be validated by the Scientific Committee; and additional social support of €1,000 for candidates with an annual per capita household income of up to €12,000.

In total, six young talents from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa have already received this scholarship. In 2022, Maria Figueira Verdelho Barreto Xavier and Alexandre Manuel Abrantes Neves, and more recently in the 2023 edition, of the 15 scholarships awarded within the social sciences field, four went to UCP students: Marta Cansado, Xavier Rendeiro Silva Cunha, Camila Monteiro, and Guilherme da Costa Pimenta.
