Introduction to Language Sciences

  • Know the object, domains and methods of Linguistics;
  • Characterize the specificity of the work of linguists and applications to teaching, translation, computing and consulting;
  • Understand the characteristics and functions of verbal language;
  • Relate language, cognition, reality, society and culture;
  • Understand the variation and change of languages;
  • Know the main historical landmarks of the reflection about languages, from the invention of writing to the current linguistic theories;
  • Acquire basic elements of phonetics/phonology: identify, characterize and represent vowels and consonants;
  • Understand the notions of word, lexeme and morpheme and the basics of flexional and derivational morphology;
  • Analyze the fundamental structure of the sentence: grammatical relations and syntactic constructions;
  • Understand the characteristics of meaning and characterize semantic-lexical structures;
  • Understand the principles of verbal interaction and know the basics of pragmatics.
