Actuality of the Greek Tragedy

  • To raise awareness of the values and achievements of the past and reflect on their actuality;
  • Contribute to a better understanding of collective memory and European cultural identity by recognizing the legacy of Greek tragic literature;
  • Deepen the knowledge of themes, concepts and fundamental structures of Greek tragedy;
  • Know the classical tradition of the great Mythic Cycles (of Troy, Thebes) and Heroic Cycles (of Theseus and the Argonauts) that underlie the poetic production of Tragedy
  • Know some of the Roman rewritings of Greek tragedy, particularly in the area of the feminine
  • Understand the importance of the tragic themes in later cultures and literatures, namely the prominence of tragic thought after the French Revolution
  • Verify how the Greco-Latin heritage had repercussions in the Portuguese literature, enriching the expression of contemporary humanity.
