Social Work and Human Rights

  • Understand the socio-historical context that led to the establishment of rights-based societies and the proclamation of the human rights enshrined in the UDHR;
  • Identify the international conventions stemming from the UDHR that are fundamental in the context of social work practice;
  • Identify the main international documents and guidelines on human rights; situate the defense of human rights within the current framework of the European Union and in Portugal;
  • Promote reflective thinking on the role of human rights within the ethical framework and in the context of social work practice;
  • Develop critical thinking and debate regarding the challenges that the promotion and defense of human rights pose to social work in the contemporary world;
  • To establish and promote the skills necessary for social work practice grounded in human rights.
