As part of the celebrations for World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, the Braga Branch of the Portuguese Red Cross is hosting a seminar titled “People, Homes, and Humanity” on May 8 at 9:00 a.m. in the Aula Magna at the Catholic University of Braga.
The initiative aims to create a space for reflection, sharing, and collaboration among different stakeholders in society, contributing to a deeper understanding of the realities faced by people experiencing homelessness and to the development of more effective and humane solutions.
According to the most recent data, from 2024, more than 14,000 people experiencing homelessness were identified in Portugal, reflecting an increase from the previous year and highlighting the growing complexity of this phenomenon. Most live in highly vulnerable conditions, often linked to prolonged periods of social exclusion, job insecurity, and a lack of family support.
Given this situation, there is an urgent need for an integrated, sustained, and humane response capable of addressing not only emergencies but also prevention and social reintegration. It is in this context that the seminar brings together national and international experts, field workers, and decision-makers to promote the sharing of knowledge, experiences, and best practices.
The program includes various opportunities for reflection, including an analysis of the phenomenon at the European and national levels, the role of communities and partnerships in promoting social inclusion, and the presentation of projects that make a difference on the ground.
Participation is free of charge, subject to prior registration, and open to the general public, subject to space availability.
Through this initiative, the Portuguese Red Cross reinforces its commitment to human dignity by fostering discussion and action on one of today’s most pressing social challenges.
